I have already written a post on the fact that universal healthcare is not free, but didn't touch on the topic of what is ultimately flawed with the universal health care plan. Now's my chance to do that exact thing.
I know people are tired of paying huge amounts of premium for their health insurance, but lets think about the alternative.
What is the one thing that stops most people from going to the doctor because of every complaint or worry they may have, or what stops people from getting those overly expensive tests when there isn't anything wrong? The answer is money. What happens when you eliminate the one thing in the way of people making appointments with the doctor? You have an influx of people who now go to the hospital for any and every little problem. You thought the wait for the doctor was long before! The main problem with this isn't you having to read a magazine for a couple more hours. The problem with more patients than the doctors can see is that there will have to be a list of importance. If you call a doctor for a fever, but there are hundreds more with "bigger" problems, the doctor will have to see you after the "bigger" problems are fixed. When a patient calls a doctor for an appointment, it usually is within a week that the appointment is made, but when there are hundreds of thousands more people going to the doctor each year, one week will turn into three months!
Another HUGE problem with universal health care is the doctor's pay. They all get paid by the government and are all paid the same. So no matter how great the doctor is, his pay is equal to that of any other doctor. What happens when all the doctor's income's are the same? They have no incentive to become better doctors, come up with better medicines, or better surgeries. Do you really want a surgeon performing surgery on you when he is disgruntled because he worked harder and took more schooling than the pediatrician down the street, but yet gets paid the same?
