How to get started on a political career

Do you constantly find yourself looking forward to those last minutes of work so you can get home and plop on your couch with a bag of Doritos, while you scan the internet for the next political topic to write about on your favorite political forum? Wasn't that a fun sentence to read (sarcasm)? If by some chance you do that or even love politics and want to get into it, but have no clue where to get started, or even what you want to do, then this is for you. Before we get started, you need to ask yourself one question. Do you have the intelligence, dedication, and motivation required to jump start your career? If so, then read on.

Where are you heading?

To start off, it's a good idea to find out the specifics of what you want to do with your career. Believe it or not, there isn't a career called politics. There are many categories and subcategories that have to do with the political arena, the problem is choosing one. In doing that, keep in mind what is going to keep you the most goal oriented, and where your passion lies.

Here is a list of jobs by the American Political Science Association. Here is a much longer list that defines the positions when you click on them.

Keep in mind that you can change your career during the process.

First step to success.

After you've figured out where you're goal is, it's time to head in that direction. The first step to most careers is getting the proper education to fill that career. Politics is no different. Unless you have some really good friends in high places, college is a necessity to getting started on this journey.

Obtaining a degree in political science is your best bet. Many universities offer some form of degree in political science, so it won't be difficult to find a college near you.

Of course, one main problem with college is money. But don't worry because there are many options to answer your financial needs. I know what you're thinking. Just get a loan... NO! That is the last option, not the first. Loans are exactly why America's in so much debt today. The best way is a scholarship. Here is a list of websites that offer many scholarships which you may be interested in:

Collegeboard
Fastweb
Sholarships
Upromise
If you must get a loan, then please get a small one and do research for small interest rates ahead of time.

Move

This part of the process is when dedication comes into play. Believe it or not, your little town in the middle of nowhere isn't exactly a hot spot for politicians and won't make you big bucks in the political spectrum. Instead, it's time for you to move to a big city, such as New York or Washington D.C. If you don't want to leave the state, you can also move to your state's capital, but other than that, you can't live in that little country home unless you have your jet take you there every day. If you absolutely must work in your city, there are government positions for your county and city, but if you plan on having that huge house you've been dreaming about for years, I wouldn't suggest it.

Write

If you've actually made it this far knowing what it takes to get there, then you can make it all the way! All that's needed now is a little wit and good writing skills.

For the next step, it's smart to begin writing articles of political importance and submitting them to newspapers to get your name out there. Let people know what you think and where you stand.

Most Important!

Volunteer volunteer volunteer! This is the #1 way to getting known in the political world, and getting those "connections" you most desperately need. It's imperative to volunteer during an election. You get to meet people who have already been in your shoes, and get to know them and find out how they made it. Most importantly, you have the opportunity to befriend them, and find out all you need to know to stay ahead in the business. You must also develop a good reputation with them, showing them dedication and willingness to work. Do all you can, come in whenever you're needed and then some, do what you are told, and do it with a good heart. Never forget this is a huge stepping stone to getting to the ultimate goal.

Applying

It's time to secure that long awaited job! Hopefully you've got many friends by now in Washington that are willing to help with this process. You obviously must apply for jobs, but don't just apply for one or two jobs. Apply for as many as you can. Apply in your county, state, and city. Go on your cities website, and there should be a list of possible jobs. Overall, you should be prepared for what is coming next, so all I have left to say is "good luck"!
